Getting GMAT Preparation Help

It is possible to do well on the GMAT without using the services of a test preparation company. However, trying to do it on your own will usually mean extra effort and time, not to mention the fact that, despite all those long hours of preparation, you may still not be completely certain what to expect on test day. The decision to use a test preparation company is an entirely personal one, but there are several distinct advantages to enlisting help from people who specialize in preparing individuals for this important test.

1. Study time becomes more efficient.

There are many concepts that may be included on the GMAT. To do well on the test, a good knowledge of each and every one of these concepts is essential. You will have to be familiar with the conventions of written English, as well as possess a good knowledge of various mathematical concepts. It is possible to review important material by using textbooks or other online resources, but this is highly inefficient, and will quite likely result in wasting a lot of time. Having flashcards or other materials that allow you to review important concepts quickly, without searching through a ton of resources, means that more time can be devoted to actually preparing for the test.

2. You will be less surprised on test day.

Most test preparation companies offer sample questions that follow the actual format that is used on the GMAT. If an individual decides to prepare for the test on their own, they may be familiar with the important concepts, but still perform badly on the test because the way that certain questions are asked comes as a surprise. Having access to sample questions, however, means that the format used in data sufficiency and sentence correction questions, for example, will not come as a surprise on test day. Completing practice questions will also allow you to develop strategies to answer specific types of questions on the actual test.

3. You can identify areas that require further study.

One big advantage of using a test preparation company is that it allows you to identify areas that need work. For example, you may find that some questions are quite simple to complete, and that you are familiar with the material on many of the flashcards. Other questions and concepts, however, may be more challenging. Using test prep resources will allow you to focus your time on the test areas that are likely to pose more challenges on the actual exam.
