Preparing for the GMAT

It is impossible to anticipate exactly what will be asked on the GMAT exam. The number of questions that may be asked are virtually unlimited, and the contents of the actual exam are top secret. However, there are several effective strategies that can help individuals to better prepare for test day, and therefore increase the chances that they will receive a high score on the GMAT.

Review Important Concepts

This is especially important when preparing for the quantitative section of the GMAT, which requires test takers to have an understanding of basic algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. Taking the time to review important mathematical concepts and identify areas that may require review and/or further study will increase the likelihood that the individual will perform well on this section of the exam. Questions in the quantitative section may include those that focus on exponents, ratios, percentages, algebra, geometry, and numerous other areas. In each case, an existing knowledge of the concept is required to answer questions correctly, so advanced preparation for this section is crucial.

Complete Sample Questions

Having a knowledge of the material that may appear on the GMAT is important, but taking the time to find and complete some sample questions is a good strategy. Many of the questions on the GMAT, including the data sufficiency and the sentence correction questions, have a specific format. So, although the individual won’t know exactly what the question will be, they can familiarize themselves with exactly how it will be asked.

Remember the Timing

One of the reasons why the GMAT is considered such as challenging exam is not only because the questions can be difficult, but also because the test taker must complete them relatively quickly if they wish to answer every question. Completing sample questions while ensuring that they are being answered as quickly as they will have to be on test day is a good way to prepare for the actual exam.

Brush up on Computer Skills

The GMAT requires test takers to have an understanding of how to perform basic computer tasks, including scrolling, using a mouse, and navigating through the test questions. Most people are familiar with how to perform these basic tasks, but it is always a good idea to review them. Many test preparation companies offer the individual the chance to practice selecting answers and moving on to subsequent questions, both of which will help the test taker to feel more comfortable and confident on test day.
